Sandra Gal, a 25-year-old from Germany, is alone in second place about midway through the first round of the Kia Classic at the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms on Thursday after shooting a six-under-par 67.

Gal, who is 6 feet tall, had a stretch of four straight birdies as the highlight of her round. A former All-America at the University of Florida, Gal’s career-best LPGA finish is a tie for fifth at the Corning Classic in 2009.

American Paige Mackenzie has also finished her round, a two-under 71 that is good enough so far for a tie for fourth.
