Brigham Young star Brandon Davies has been suspended the rest of the season for violating the school’s honor code, hurting the third-ranked Cougars’ chances of winning a national championship.

Davies, the team’s leading rebounder, reportedly admitted to BYU officials that he violated the honor code provision that bans premarital sex. He will be allowed to remain in school as the school’s Honor Code Office conducts an investigation.

Davies reportedly apologized to his teammates after his suspension was announced Wednesday.

Students at BYU, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, must follow a code that asks students to engage in an honest and virtuous lifestyle. Students who violate the code can be dismissed from the university.

Davies was out of the lineup Wednesday in an 82-64 loss to New Mexico. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward was averaging 11.1 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game.
