Women’s basketball: Third-ranked Stanford defeats ninth-ranked UCLA, 67-53

With older sister Nnemkadi Ogwumike on the bench because of an ankle sprain, Stanford freshman Chiney Ogwumike stepped up for the third-ranked Stanford, leading the Cardinal to a 67-53 victory over ninth-ranked UCLA in a Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Pauley Pavilion.

Chiney Ogwumike scored 18 points as the Cardinal improved to 24-2 overall and 15-0 in the Pac 10. Stanford extended its winning streak to 18 games.

Senior guard Darxia Morris scored 14 points for UCLA, which is 22-3 and 12-2.

The Bruins played the Cardinal to a 28-28 tie in the first half, but Chiney Ogwumike scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half and senior forward Kayla Pedersen became more active and finished with 13 points. Freshman guard Tony Kukenis also had 13 points for the Cardinal.
