Todd Howard was fired as UCLA’s defensive line coach Thursday after five seasons.

It represented a reversal on the part of Coach Rick Neuheisel, who said he was “done with the defensive staff” when he fired defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough on Dec. 18. But a person close to Howard, who was not authorized to speak on the subject, said Howard had been told to look for a job at the time of Bullough’s firing.

Neuheisel continues to search for a defensive coordinator, having interviewed Kentucky assistant Steve Brown on Tuesday.

Howard is the last remaining member from Karl Dorrell’s staff. Dorrell was fired after the 2007 season.
