An 89th-minute goal by forward Jesus Padilla earned Chivas USA a 1-0 victory over the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday in a Major League Soccer exhibition game played at Casa Grande, Ariz.

Both teams are working in the preseason to get their defense sorted out, so offensive chances were few and far between in the match.

Padilla’s goal came when he collected a long downfield pass from defender Michael Umana, beat the Whitecaps’ offside trap and slotted the ball past Vancouver goalkeeper Jay Nolly.

Chivas USA might have taken the lead earlier in the game, but Mariano Trujillo fired a penalty kick wide of the net after a foul on Alan Gordon.

The game evened Chivas USA’s preseason record against fellow MLS teams at 2-2 ahead of next Friday’s scrimmage against D.C. United in Carson. Chivas USA opens the season on March 19 at home against Sporting Kansas City.

Earlier in the week, the team unveiled its new jersey for the 2011 season, during which the Mexican brewery Corona will have its name prominently displayed on the front of the traditional red-and-white vertical-striped Chivas jersey.
