Clinton Portis released by Redskins

Portis_250 Clinton Portis' seven-season stint with the Washington Redskins has ended.

The 29-year-old running back, coming off back-to-back seasons cut short by injuries, was released by the team Monday after opting not to restructure his deal.

Portis, who spent his first two years in the league with the Denver Broncos, has 9,933 career rushing yards and needed 648 yards to catch Hall of Famer John Riggins as the Redskins' all-time rushing leader. He was scheduled to make $8.3 million next season.
