Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler sprained a knee ligament during Sunday’s NFC championship game and would have been questionable had the Bears advanced to the Super Bowl, Coach Lovie Smith said Monday.

Smith said Cutler sprained a medial collateral ligament in Sunday’s 21-14 loss to Green Bay. Cutler left the game for good early in the third quarter, leading some fans and media members to question his toughness and dedication to the team.

Third-string quarterback Caleb Hanie, who led the Bears to a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, said of Cutler on Monday, “He’s limping around and feels bad that we lost.”
