Cleveland Browns hire Pat Shurmur as head coach

Pa_500t

The Cleveland Browns hired St. Louis offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their head coach, the team announced Thursday.

Shurmur, who has no head-coaching experience, has a tall task ahead of him. He will be taking over a team that has made only one playoff appearance in 13 years and went 5-11 under former Coach Eric Mangini, who was fired Jan. 3.

Shurmur, 45, was the first candidate interviewed by Browns President Mike Holmgren. He will be the team's fifth coach since their expansion return in 1999.
