The Kings dominated the second period and outshot Calgary, 11-4, but couldn’t pad their lead. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick was rarely tested, but Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was challenged early and often and passed every test.

Utility forward Brad Richardson, who sustained an undisclosed injury in the first period, did not return for the second period. A Kings spokesman said Richardson, who has played wing and center with speed and energy, had an upper-body injury and was not expected to return.

The Kings ended the second period with a power play they gained after Calgary was penalized for having too many men on the ice during a line change.
