Hideki Matsui appears headed to Oakland

Free agent outfielder/designated hitter Hideki Matsui is close to a deal with the Oakland Athletics, the Associated Press is reporting.

An unnamed source says Matsui, who hit .274 with 21 home runs and 84 RBIs with the Angels last season, is working to finalize a deal and an announcement could be made as early as Tuesday.

Matsui spent his first seven major league seasons with the New York Yankees and was the 2009 World Series MVP before signing with the Angels last off-season.

The chances of the 36-year-old slugger returning to the Angels already appeared remote when the team did not offer salary arbitration to him in November.
