Teemu Selanne, the Ducks’ 40-year-old standout, sat out Friday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings because of a sore groin.

Selanne missed three games in late November because of the soreness, but had played the last two. He didn’t practice Thursday, taking what Coach Randy Carlyle called a ‘maintenance day,’ implying he still was likely to play. Selanne is officially ‘day to day’ with the injury, but he and the team are taking a cautious approach with their third-leading scorer, hoping he won’t lose significant time to injuries as he did last year with a broken hand and broken jaw.

Matt Beleskey, called up from Syracuse of the American Hockey League to replace of Aaron Voros, who has been ill, took Selanne’s spot in the lineup.
