The Chicago White Sox are closing in on a four-year, $56-million deal for free-agent slugger Adam Dunn, according to a major-league source with knowledge of the situation.

The news will be something of a relief to the Angels, because Dunn, a first baseman who hit .260 with 38 home runs and 103 runs batted in for the Washington Nationals last season, was reportedly considering an offer from the American League West-rival Oakland Athletics.

Dunn’s signing in Chicago could signal the end of Paul Konerko’s 12-year run with the White Sox. Konerko is a free agent first baseman as well.
