The teams combined to score three times in the final minutes of the opening period, with the Sharks emerging with a 2-1 lead.

Scott Parse was credited with his first goal of the season on a play that blended skill and luck. Dustin Brown made it possible by eluding defenseman Kent Huskins and passing the puck off the boards and to himself on the left wing. He took a backhander that bounced in front, where Patrick Marleau tried to get a stick on it but inadvertently deflected it off Parse’s skate and past Antero Niittymaki at 16:33.

San Jose pulled even at 18:05. Joe Pavelski was behind the goal line when he made a quick passout to Ryane Clowe, who flicked a short shot past Jonathan Bernier for his fourth goal this season.

The Sharks struck again at 19:20. Bernier made one save but couldn’t stop a rebound by Torrey Mitchell.
