Donovan McNabb wants to be a member of the Washington Redskins for a long time. That’s what he said on his weekly radio show Tuesday, a day after he agreed to a reported five-year, $78-million contract extension with the team.

But a lengthy stay with the team is anything but guaranteed -- actually, there doesn’t seem to be much about McNabb’s contract extension that is guaranteed.

Apparently Monday’s reports that the new deal includes $40 million of guaranteed money is way off.

McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, clarified Tuesday that although the new deal does include ‘$40 million in guarantees,’ the Redskins could cut the quarterback at the end of this season without owing him any more than the $3.5 million he was given for this year as part of the new contract.

According to the Washington Post, McNabb’s contract includes salary guarantees against injury from 2011 through 2014, totaling $34.75 million.

Still, McNabb sounds confident about his future with the Redskins. He said the lack of guarantees has little to do with the team’s feelings toward him and instead is a sign of caution with a potential labor dispute looming in the near future.

‘I will be here for the next couple of years to continue to turn this thing around,’ said McNabb, who struggled in the Redskins’ 59-28 loss to Philadelphia on Monday night. ‘I think I’m happy, I hope the Redskin nation is happy. I look forward to continue to try to move this thing in the right direction.’
