Kings star defenseman Drew Doughty could be closer to returning but is doubtful for Thursday’s game in Dallas.

General Manager Dean Lombardi said Doughty, 20, had a setback on Saturday after experiencing concussion symptoms.

But the Norris Trophy runner-up skated on Sunday in Los Angeles and again Monday. He experienced no symptoms after Sunday’s workout, and the team was waiting to hear how he felt after Monday’s skate, Lombardi said.

Lombardi said Monday afternoon that Doughty won’t be ready for Wednesday’s game in Chicago and is doubtful against the Stars.

Doughty has to have two symptom-free days in a row before his cognitive skills can be tested. If he shows no symptoms from Monday’s workout, he would be tested. To gain medical clearance to resume playing hockey, he would have to pass those tests.

Lombardi said the team is hoping Doughty might be able to rejoin them as soon as Thursday.

More later.
