The Angels on Thursday promoted national cross-checker Ric Wilson to scouting director, General Manager Tony Reagins announced. Wilson replaces Eddie Bane, who was fired in late September after eight seasons in the position.

“Ric has served in various roles in the scouting arena and brings a wealth of industry knowledge and expertise,” Reagins said in a prepared statement. “He is a tremendous leader and evaluator. His focus will be directed on the acquisition of championship-quality talent around the globe.”

Wilson had served as the team’s national cross-checker since 2003. Before joining the Angels, he spent 11 years in the Milwaukee Brewers organization as an area scout (1992-94), Southwest supervisor (1994-95) and West Coast supervisor (1996-2002).

“I want to thank the Angels’ organization for the opportunity they have given me,” Wilson said in the team’s release. “We will continue to bring impact-type players from all means available as per the draft, international market, free agents and trades. We will concentrate on power bats, power arms, speed and defense in order to create a balance of high-end players, as well as solid overall baseball players.”

A former catcher and first baseman, Wilson was a junior college All-American at Mesa Community College (1978-79) and played collegiately at Arizona State (1980-81). He was a member of the Sun Devils’ 1981 national championship team and selected by Seattle in the first round (secondary phase) of the 1981 draft. He spent six seasons (1981-86) in the Mariners’ farm system.
