Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin’s season ended Sunday when a shattered bat punctured the player’s chest as he was running from third base to home during Sunday’s game at Florida.
Colvin actually scored on the double by Welington Castillo but was hit in the upper chest by the sharp end of the broken bat, allowing air into his chest and potentially his lungs, a Cubs trainer said.
He was in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami on Monday but is expected to remain a few more days for observation.
He said in a statement released by the Cubs on Monday: ‘I want to thank Cubs fans for their support all season, especially right now, and let everyone know that I’m doing OK.
‘I also want to thank everyone who has helped take care of me here in Miami -- the Cubs and Marlins training and medical staffs, the EMTs at the ballpark and everyone here at the hospital.’
