Former USC running back Reggie Bush is expected to be stripped of his 2005 Heisman Trophy, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Citing unnamed sources close to the Heisman Trophy Trust, the website reported Tuesday that the organization likely will take the trophy away before the end of September following an investigation into Bush’s eligibility during his playing days with the Trojans. The NCAA ruled in June that the New Orleans Saints running back was ineligible to play during the 2005 season because of illegal benefits he received.

In June, the Heisman Trophy Trust declined to comment on the NCAA’s findings, saying in a statement it did not have a timetable for a decision on Bush’s Heisman.

If Bush loses the trophy, he will become the first player to be stripped of the prestigious award in its 75-year history. USC already has returned its copy of Bush’s Heisman that was kept on display in Heritage Hall.
