David Frost, a former youth hockey coach and agent who has been banned from several minor and junior hockey organizations in his native Canada, has been working intermittently at the Laguna Niguel Hockey Academy for several months, but he contradicted reports on the websites of the Toronto Sun and Truehockey.com that said he has been teaching hockey to kids.

Frost was acquitted two years ago of four charges of sexual exploitation involving former players and their girlfriends while he coached a junior team in 1996 and 1997. He also was the target of an alleged murder-for-hire plot initiated by one of his players, Mike Danton.

Frost said in a telephone interview Tuesday that he is writing protocols for hockey training equipment at the Laguna Niguel facility and is not on the ice with youngsters. He said has been using the name Jim McCauley for business purposes -- a combination of his middle name, James, and the maiden name of his wife, the daughter of former NHL referee John McCauley -- and in order to keep the focus on the hockey equipment “and not on NHL, NHL, David Frost.”

The academy’s website lists McCauley Hockey as the director of hockey at the facility.

“I’m certainly not running a hockey school. I’m certainly not here on an alias,” he said. “We’re not ducking. I’m completely legal. The company is completely legal. It’s above board.”

Frost said he operates a company called McCauley Development and Demonstration, which analyzes video of players and advises on training techniques. He said he is under contract to Robert Barth, director of U.S. operations for All Motion Hockey Systems, to demonstrate and develop the hockey training equipment and develop protocols to be used by those who purchase the equipment.

He said he comes to Laguna Niguel for 30 days at a time and then returns to Canada. “I’m not hiding. Rob’s not hiding,” Frost said.

Barth said he has known Frost for 15 years and sent his own son to one of Frost’s hockey camps in Canada. “Over the years, I could say he’s been crude...’ Barth said. But he said Frost “is doing a fantastic job” writing the protocols for the equipment and Barth downplayed Frost’s ban by youth leagues in Canada.

“A lot of people are banned or suspended or whatever. This guy put four people in the NHL,” Barth said. “I’ve given him a state-of-the-art tool and he has taken hockey training to a new level. Sometimes when people are that effective, other people get jealous of them.”
