Defensive end Datone Jones will require surgery on his right foot and could be lost for the season, although Coach Rick Neuheisel was optimistic that he will return this season. Jones, a junior, broke a bone during practice Tuesday and will have surgery to insert a screw to secure the fifth metatarsal bone.

“The surgery is usually a 10- to 12-week deal,” Neuheisel said. Asked whether Jones would be able to play this season, Neuheisel said, “You never know. We’ll have to wait and see. I want him to work hard and to get back.”

If Jones is unable to return, “The fortunate news is he does have a redshirt shirt year available to him.”

The injury led to a shift within the defensive line. Nate Chandler, who had moved from tight end to defensive tackle, has been moved to defensive end.
