Rafael Marquez injures thumb, requiring his Sept. 18 fight with Juan Manuel Lopez to be postponed

The promoter for boxer Rafael Marquez told The Times on Friday that the fighter has suffered a right-thumb injury with doctors telling him he can't fight for six weeks.

Former super-bantamweight champion Marquez had a Sept. 18 featherweight title bout scheduled against Puerto Rico's Juan Manuel Lopez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Marquez's promoter, Gary Shaw, said he was hopeful Lopez's promoter, Top Rank, would be willing to reschedule the bout in either October or November.

Top Rank executive Todd duBoef said that he would likely accommodate that request but had yet to speak with Shaw.
