A source ‘with knowledge of the situation’ has told the Associated Press that Brett Favre is retiring for the third time.

Favre, 40, reportedly has informed the team that he will not return to the Minnesota Vikings for a second season because his surgically repaired left ankle is not rehabilitating as he had hoped. Favre injured his ankle in the NFC championship game loss to the New Orleans Saints and had arthroscopic surgery in May.

Vikings fans, however, should not necessarily fret. Favre told the Vikings last year that he was retiring, but he ended up joining them at training camp.

Favre had an outstanding year in 2009, throwing for 4,202 yards with 33 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

The 11-time Pro Bowl and three-time MVP quarterback, who has a record 181 wins and 6,083 completions, started 285 consecutive times, 309 including the playoffs, a milestone for a position player in the NFL.
