Bobby Thomson, whose ‘shot heard ‘round the world’ might be the most famous home run in baseball history, died at age 86 Monday night at his home in Savannah, Ga.

Thomson, who had been in declining health for years, died peacefully, according to his daughter Megan Thomson Armstrong. He was a career .270 hitter and played for five teams in 15 seasons.

His walkoff home run off the Dodgers’ Ralph Branca into the left-field stands of the Polo Grounds on Oct. 3, 1951, capped a best-of-three playoff as the Giants completed an unlikely comeback to win the National Leaguepennant. They were 13 1/2 games behind the Dodgers in mid-August.
