With more than half a day to spare, the Angels on Monday morning signed third baseman Kaleb Cowart, their top pick in the amateur draft.

Scouting director Eddie Bane had said last week that he expected negotiations to go down to the 9 p.m. PDT signing deadline, but the Angels were able to reach an agreement with the 18th overall selection well before then.

‘We’re pleased to officially welcome Kaleb to our organization,’ Bane said in a statement. ‘He will add to the talented pieces already in our farm system and will play a large role in the future success of the Angels.’

Cowart, the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, hit .654 with 11 home runs, 59 runs batted in and 36 stolen bases for Cook County High in Adel, Ga.

[Updated 11:44 a.m.: Baseball America is reporting that he agreed to a bonus of $2.3 million. ‘It’s right where I was looking to go,’ Cowart said on a conference call with reporters. Cowart said he would probably use part of his bonus to purchase a Yukon Denali.]
