A move to the leadoff spot sparked an offensive surge that resulted in Angels outfielder Bobby Abreu being selected American League player of the week.

Abreu hit .524 with two home runs and five runs batted in during the six games ending Sunday, helping the Angels complete a homestand in which they won four of six games.

Abreu led the league with a .615 on-base percentage, tied for second with a .952 slugging percentage and collected 11 hits, including a walk-off homer in a victory over Kansas City.

It is the first AL weekly award for Abreu, who won the National League weekly award three times with the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in his career.
