Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dead at 80

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, 80, has died after suffering a heart attack at his Tampa, Fla., home.

Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973 and the team won seven World Series titles under his ownership.

Spokesman Howard Rubenstein said Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning. He had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died about 6:30 a.m.

Steinbrenner had been in poor health for several years.
