The Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia was on crutches during pre-Home Run Derby batting practice Monday.

That didn’t stop him from getting out of the dugout and speaking with four military men invited on the diamond. He was one of many who stopped to chat with Captain Brian McDermott and other military personnel invited to the event.

Actress Alyssa Milano and Yankees outfielder and Home Run Derby participant Nick Swisher also took photos with McDermott and company.

“My grandfather was a military man,” Swisher said. “Freedom ain’t free. These guys are out there fighting to give us what we have over here. If you’re not thankful for that you’re an idiot.”

McDermott was thankful when he heard Swisher’s comments.
“I appreciate his support,” McDermott said.
