Angels right-hander Joel Pineiro was scratched from Wednesday’s start against the Boston Red Sox because of a left oblique strain, an injury Pineiro suffered while warming up in the bullpen before the game at Angel Stadium.

Reliever Scot Shields made an emergency start, the first time since 2003 the veteran right-hander has started a game, and the 15th time in his career he has started.

There was no word at game time as to the seriousness of the injury to Pineiro, who is 10-7 with a 4.18 earned run average, but such injuries often sideline pitchers for three to four weeks.

The loss of Pineiro could deal another significant blow to a team whose playoff hopes are already fading; the Angels entered play today 8 1/2 games behind the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West.
