Joe Girardi jumps gun on Adrian Beltre's AL All-Star roster spot

Beltre_150 American League Manager Joe Girardi announced Monday morning at an All-Star game news conference that Michael Young would replace injured third baseman Adrian Beltre on the AL roster, giving the Texas Rangers seven representatives for Tuesday's game in Angel Stadium.

But Beltre, the Boston Red Sox third baseman who injured his hamstring against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, said no league or All-Star game official had told him he was taken off the roster and that he would try to play.

"I'm in for now," Beltre said. "I'm going to work out today and see how it feels."

Young was believed to be en route from Texas to Anaheim on Monday morning and was not available during the AL media session at the Anaheim Marriott.
