The Angels have confirmed it -- New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi has selected Angels ace Jered Weaver to replace Yankees starter CC Sabathia on the American League All-Star roster.

Not that Weaver will actually pitch in the All-Star game on July 13 at Angel Stadium.

Like Sabathia, Weaver won’t be able to pitch because of a new rule that bars pitchers who start on the Sunday before the All-Star game from participating in baseball’s midsummer showcase.

So now Girardi will have to pick another pitcher.

But as Ben Bolch, with the Angels in Chicago, pointed out in an earlier post, at least Weaver is getting the recognition and will participate in the festivities and wave to the home crowd. He also would receive a $50,000 bonus for being selected to the team, thanks to a clause in his contract. He joins teammate Torii Hunter, who was selected as a reserve outfielder in balloting by players.

Weaver is 8-3 with a 2.82 earned-run average and a major league-leading 124 strikeouts.
