Last month at the NHL Entry Draft here in L.A., the Anaheim Ducks had the 12th overall pick and were thrilled that defenseman Cam Fowler was still available when it came their turn.

On Wednesday, the Ducks signed the 6-foot-1,190-pound Fowler to a three-year entry-level contract.

As The Times’ Helene Elliott pointed out at the time of the draft, the Ducks were perilously thin on defense even before Scott Niedermayer retired. The 18-year-old Windsor, Ontario, Canada, native should be able to help that situation.

Fowler’s numbers from last season show why he was ranked fifth among North American skaters. In 55 games with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, he had eight goals and 55 points, helping them win their second consecutive championship. One more noteworthy stat in the plus/minus category, he was a +38.

Fowler also won gold as a member of Team USA at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2009 IIHF U-18 World Championship, at which he was named the tournament’s top defenseman.
