In its early bow-out of the 2006 World Cup, the U.S. gave up its first goal in the fifth minute of its first game.

Saturday, in its opening match of the 2010 World Cup, England’s Steve Gerrard beat that by a minute, giving England a 1-0 lead over the Americans in the fourth minute.

Gerrard’s goal came at the end of a four-pass sequence following a throw-in, taking a feed from Emile Heskey in the six-yard box and then tapping it with his right foot past U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard.
