Financial traders are banking on a South African win in Friday’s World Cup opener.

Nigel Rendell, an emerging-market strategist at RBC Capital in London, told Bloomberg that a win by the host country over Mexico could strengthen the nation’s currency.

‘If South Africa wins we could well see the rand a little bit stronger as the euphoria of it all boosts sentiment,’ Rendell said. ‘There could well be a correlation between South African goals scored and the fortunes of the rand.

‘Traders will be glued to their screens and might well be putting on trades on the back of goals.’

South Africa is picked by many to be the first host country to be eliminated from the World Cup in group play.
