Veteran Rafael Marquez has just scored one of the most important goals of his long career, slotting a pass from Andres Guardado inside goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune’s near post in the 79th minute to tie the score at 1-1.

South Africa twice had the opportunity to double its lead, but both times Teko Modise wasted the chance. First he sliced a shot wide of the right post and then he was denied a goal by goalkeeper Oscar Perez’s knee.

Clinging to its 1-0 lead, South Africa finally yielded the goal, much to the relief of El Tri fans in the stadium and at home.

Updated at 12:30 p.m.: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated the name of Mexican goalkeeper Oscar Perez.
