Pacific 10 Commissioner Larry Scott has confirmed in a phone call that Texas has turned down an invitation to join the conference, ending dreams for now of a 16-team super conference.

The Pac-10 was expected to release a statement shortly. The deal for the Pac-10 to become the Pac-16 was scuttled by last-minute negotiations to keep the Big 12 Conference intact with 10 teams. Colorado announced last week it was joining the Pac-10 and Nebraska announced it was joining the Big Ten.
