Padres to honor Manuel ‘Nay’ Hernandez

The San Diego Padres will pay tribute tonight to Manuel ‘Nay’ Hernandez, who was killed in combat during World War II.

In a ceremony before tonight’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Petco Park, the team will dedicate a plaque in the outfield Power Alley to Hernandez. Several members of the Hernandez family, including his son, are set to be in attendance.

Hernandez who grew up in San Diego, was the starting left-fielder for the Pacific Coast League San Diego team when he was drafted in August 1944. He was killed in early 1945 in the fighting in Europe. He was 25.
