Angels first baseman Kendry Morales on Thursday underwent surgery to repair a broken bone above his left ankle and will miss the remainder of the season.

There was some hope that Morales, who suffered the injury while leaping onto home plate to celebrate his walk-off grand slam against Seattle on May 29, would be able to return in September.

But after performing the surgery, doctors determined that the injury was too severe for Morales to play again in 2010. Morales led the Angels with a .290 average, 11 home runs and 29 runs batted in when he got hurt.
