Johnson assumed the lead in the race on lap 103 when Marcos Ambrose was penalized for not maintaining his speed under caution. He turned off his engine to conserve fuel and coast around the track but couldn’t restart his car.

Johnson led the final seven laps of the race. It was his fourth win of the season and the 51st Cup win of his career.

Johnson, the reigning four-time Sprint Cup Series champion, was winless in 17 career Cup starts on road courses. He moved into 10th place in career Cup wins. Lee Petty is ninth with 54 career Cup wins.

Robby Gordon was second in the race in Sonoma, followed by Kevin Harvick in third. Kasey Kahne was fourth and Jeff Gordon was fifth.

Ambrose finished sixth. Greg Biffle was seventh, followed by Boris Said, Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya.
