The name Frankie Gomez just lends itself to a successful boxing career.

The man behind the name does, too.

Gomez, an 18-year-old boxer from East L.A., is the main event at tonight’s Fight Night Club, and will face Jaime Orrantia at the Nokia Club.

It will be just his fourth professional match. So far, he is 3-0 with three knockouts.

Gomez, whose father was a policeman and who came into boxing through the LAPD’s Police Activities League, was the most sought-after amateur in the country when he signed with Golden Boy Promotions, a boxing firm owned and run by East L.A. native and former world champion Oscar de la Hoya, in March.

The 2009 U.S. amateur champion and International Boxing Association silver medalist, Gomez turned pro after a 120-8 record as an amateur in the Junior and Open divisions. This will be his second professional match in front of a Los Angeles crowd after many amateur fights in his hometown.

Gomez just took the ring to a standing ovation - and the Los Angeles boy and No. 1 prospect is about to begin his fight.
