Once upon a time, Daunte Culpepper and Dennis Green were together as quarterback and coach on a Minnesota Vikings team that seemed destined for NFL greatness.

But the two of them ended up taking the Vikings only as far as the NFC championship game once during their relatively brief stint together with the team, and it’s been a long time since either of them have been associated with the purple and gold.

Now they have another shot at professional football greatness together, only this time it’s with the United Football League. Culpepper, 33, has signed with the Sacramento Mountain Lions, who are coached by Green.

Culpepper is expected to be in uniform when mini-camp begins Thursday at a high school stadium.

In 11 NFL seasons with Minnesota, Miami, Oakland and Detroit, Culpepper threw for 24,153 yards and 149 touchdowns.

Green, who was an NFL head coach for 13 years with the Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals, coached the Mountain Lions last season when they were located in San Francisco and known as the California Redwoods.
