Saturday’s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-John Duddy fight in San Antonio has been declared a title eliminator that will give the winner an immediate shot at World Boxing Council middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

The pay-per-view bout ($39.95, 6 p.m.) at San Antonio’s Alamodome is scheduled for 12 rounds atop a card that includes a lightweight fight between former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera (68-7) and Brazil’s Adailton De Jesus (25-4). Barrera is attempting a run at a world title in a fourth division.

Long criticized for producing uninspired showcase performances, Chavez (40-0-1) is now being trained by Freddie Roach, the two-time trainer of the year who trains Manny Pacquiao. The relationship is paying dividends, both said last week.

In a conference call this week, Chavez said, ‘Without a doubt there have been a lot of changes for this training camp. I have never been with a trainer so capable. I had heard great things about him, but until you go through a regimen like his you don’t know what he’s capable of doing. I know I’m in the best physical shape that I’ve ever been in and I am well-prepared. I am happy that I made the decision to go train with him, and I think it will pay off and you’ll see it.’
