Kaleb Cowart, a power pitching and power hitting prospect from Cook (Ga.) High, was taken by the Angels with their first pick, 18th overall, in today's Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Cowart, who is 6 feet 3 and 210 pounds, throws hard but wants to play every day. The Angels drafted him as a third baseman.

Cowart has signed to play in college at Florida State and reportedly has floated a figure of $3 million to sign.

As a high school senior, Cowart batted .654 with 11 home runs, 59 runs batted in and 36 stolen bases in as many attempts. As a pitcher, he was 10-1 with a 1.05 earned-run average and 116 strikeouts in 73 innings.

The Angels have five of the first 40 picks.
