The Angels designated outfielder Michael Ryan for assignment after Wednesday’s game. They plan to use the roster spot to activate catcher Jeff Mathis on Friday, assuming Mathis comes out of his final minor league rehabilitation game Wednesday night without any problem.

Ryan, 32, batted .205 with no home runs in 39 at-bats. He had not appeared in the major leagues since 2005.

‘I had a blast being here,’ Ryan said. ‘These guys gave me the opportunity to get back to the big leagues. I’ll never forget that. I just wish I could have done better.’

The Angels have 10 days to trade or release Ryan, or to assign him to the minor leagues. If he clears waivers, the Angels would like him to return to triple-A Salt Lake. But the choice is his, and he said he has not yet decided.
