World Cup: Turkey defeats Czech Republic as both prepare to play U.S.

Turkey defeated the Czech Republic, 2-1, on Saturday in a match featuring two teams that the U.S. will play next week in its final World Cup preparatory games before leaving for South Africa.

Goals by Arda Turan in the 31st minute and Nihat Kahveci three minutes after halftime were enough to earn the Turks the victory in front of 16,371. Milan Cerny scored a late consolation goal for the Czechs in the first international game to be played at the new Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.

The Czechs play the U.S. on Tuesday in Hartford, Conn., and the Americans then take on the Turks in Philadelphia on May 29. Bob Bradley, the U.S. coach, revealed Saturday that defender Carlos Bocanegra had undergone hernia surgery before reporting to the team's camp at Princeton University but said the procedure would not affect his availability for the World Cup.
