World Cup: Surprises as U.S. names its 23-player squad for South Africa 2010

Buddle_400 Coming out of virtually nowhere--with all due respect to Major League Soccer's Galaxy and Puebla of the Mexican league-Edson Buddle and Hercules Gomez both were included on the U.S. World Cup roster Wednesday when it was revealed just moments ago by U.S. Coach Bob Bradley in Bristol, Conn.

The team will travel to Washington on Thursday for a morning meeting at the White House with President Obama before relocating to Philadelphia for Saturday afternoon's game against Turkey at Lincoln Financial Field.

The team that will carry the flag in South Africa features:

Goalkeepers: Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan.

Defenders: Steve Cherundolo, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Clarence Goodson, Jonathan Spector.

Midfielders: Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Jose Francsico Torres.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Herculez Gomez, Robbie Findley,
