World Cup: Mexican team delayed in Germany [Update]

The scheduled arrival of Mexico's World Cup team in London, where it is to play England in an exhibition Monday, was delayed several hours Sunday by mechanical problems, costing the team a chance to practice on Wembley Stadium's infamously poor turf.

Mexico was set to leave Nuremberg, Germany -- about a half-hour up the road from its base at the Adidas training center -- on a charter flight at about 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. But according to team officials, the plane the team was supposed to use sustained damage to an engine when a bird was sucked into a jet on its flight into Nuremberg.

The problem was detected before the 24 players, coaches and officials traveling with the Mexican team had boarded the plane.

The team finally arrived just before 10 p.m. local time, officials said.
