Start spreading the news: The Super Bowl is coming to New York.

It took four ballots, but NFL owners on Tuesday finally agreed to award Super Bowl XLVIII to the New York / New Jersey area. The game will be played in February 2014 in the $1.6-billion stadium that will open this season.

New York edged bids by Tampa and South Florida.

This marks the first time the Super Bowl will be played outdoors in a cold-weather city. That clearly was a concern for many NFL owners, and New York failed to achieve the required 24 votes on the first three tries.

South Florida, which played host to the Super Bowl in February, was eliminated in the second vote. New York won by simple majority on the fourth vote.

The NFL meetings are taking place in Irving, Texas.
