UCLA scored the first run in its Pacific 10 Conference showdown with Arizona State on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium, but the Bruins squandered a chance for a big inning.

Blair Dunlap led off the second with a single off the middle off Sun Devils right-hander Seth Blair and went to third when Cody Regis singled off shortstop Drew Maggi’s glove into left field. But Dean Espy grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, scoring Dunlap, and Niko Gallego’s ensuing single proved harmless when Steve Rodriguez flied out to left to end the inning.

UCLA’s Gerrit Cole has allowed one walk and one hit in two innings.
