UCLA’s unbeaten baseball team opened Pacific 10 Conference play Thursday night at home against Stanford, and it was a nail-biter for Bruins fans.

The Bruins pulled out a 6-5 victory when Dean Espy’s one-out single in the bottom of the 10th scored Niko Gallego from third base with the winning run. UCLA improved to 22-0 overall, its longest winning streak in the 91-year history of Bruin baseball.

Freshman third baseman Cody Regis had a key hit for UCLA, delivering two-run single in the seventh inning to tie the score, 5-5. It came off Stanford’s standout reliever, Alex Pracher, who came in with a 4-0 record.

Another big play for the Bruins came in the ninth inning, when shortstop Tyler Rahmatullathrew out Tyler Gaffney of Stanford at the plate.

Rahmatullahit a home run for the Bruins and reliever Dan Klein got the victory. The three-game series continues on Friday with Trevor Bauer of UCLA scheduled to start on the mound in the 6 o’clock game.

FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported Niko Gallego had thrown out Tyler Gaffney at the plate. Tyler Rahmatulla made the throw.
