Phil Mathews, former basketball coach at the University of San Francisco, will be hired as an assistant coach at UCLA, according to an athletic department source, who was not authorized to comment publicly on the situation. Mathews has been an assistant at Nebraska the last four seasons but has strong Southern California ties, having played at UC Irvine in the early 1970s. He was an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton and head coach at Ventura and San Bernardino colleges. Ventura won the California state title in 1994-95.

He replaces Donnie Daniels, who left to become an assistant coach at Gonzaga.

Mathews spent nine seasons as USF’s coach from 1995-2004, leading the Dons to the NCAA tournament in 1998.
